饰）驾驶的潜艇出海考察。在小笠原群岛附近的海沟处，海底莫名其妙的乱泥流令博士忧心忡忡。经过对各方材料缜密慎重的调查，田所博士作出一个震惊全国乃至世界的预测“由于地球变动，日本即将在两年之内完全沉入海底”。他的预测起初并未得到政府的完全信任，然而在此之后各地强烈地震相继爆发，休灭火山也重新喷发，事态正以出乎意料的速度恶化。在这个与世隔绝的岛国，人民陷入前所未有的疯狂之中……
